Sometimes you want the sleeves from one pattern, the bodice of another and the skirt from a third pattern to make the ultimate dress. Or maybe the collar just isn't what you want, but this other one from another pattern IS! Then what you need is our FRANKENPATTERNING class! Learn how to make those pieces fit together, how to figure out what order to assemble, and if you need to harvest any other pieces from your donor patterns for your creation!
This class has some abstract thinking and is for Intermediate-Advanced students who have experience and good working knowledge of sewing construction and patterns.
You can have fantastic fabric, a fantastic pattern, and still end up with a piece that is "Meh" due to mis-aligned seams, random placement of fabric elements or lousy color manipulation. Learn how to "think through" pattern placement on printed fabrics and how to align crossovers on seams, pockets and more.
This class has some abstract thinking and is for Intermediate-Advanced students who have experience and good working knowledge of sewing construction and patterns.
So, you know how to assemble a pattern, and your technique and sewing skills are good but the final fit of your patterns is off. Learn how to properly measure yourself, apply these measurements to selecting and adjusting printed patterns, and a few tricks for spotting & correcting fitting problems without any tantrums!
Student Materials: Bring a pencil & paper to take notes, this class will give you the best results if you have some sewing experience and are comfortable with how garments are constructed.
There's more to sewing great garments than just killer technique and beautiful fabric...it's about knowing how to use the design and drape in the fabric to highlight your best form and knowing what pattern styles work best for your body type too! We'll discuss how to look at printed patterns to determine if they will work for you, and how to choose fabric and use the printed or woven design to make a garment that is out of this world. It's an elusive goal, but once you know what to look for, you'll be creating superstar results every time.
This class should be taken long with/in addition to Fussy Cutting, as you will need to use Fussy Cutting techniques to accomplish the goals discussed in class.
I cannot praise Tish and the classes at HISS enough! I just completed the “Beginner Sewing Series” and they were both fun and incredibly educational. Tish balances critical practical knowledge with “secrets” that only someone could know with her experience — which makes classes MORE than worth it for her students. I booked 3 more sessions before my series even ended because I enjoyed my time at HISS so much! I also now have the skills + knowledge to practice on my own outside of the studio, as well as notes/lecture slides to help if I get stuck. I can’t wait to learn more!
